That’s a subjective question. How often do you wash your underwear? That’s what you’re using the towel as. But it’s bigger so you’re not sitting in the same spot all the time, and it’s a lot thicker than underwear is. So maybe you don’t need to clean it as often. It depends on how clean you are and how clean you feel you need your towel to be.
For me I would take two or three towels to the resort I frequently visit for day visits. One I would place on the lounge chair by the pool and the other I would use to towel myself off with or carry with me if I wanted to sit on a bench to watch a volleyball game (by the end of the summer though I was playing more volleyball then watching). When I camped the night I would take one or two extra towels plus a pair of shorts and a set of clothes. The reason for the clothes was one because it gets cold in the northeast (United States) at night. My first night I shivered all the way back to my site since I enjoy night swimming and was on over enthusiast newbie nudist. Needless to say the next time I remembered to carry at least a sweat shirt with me. For me to depending on the resort atmosphere I needed to start my morning clothed and then shed my clothing after I freshened up (yet that was only at one of the four places I camped over night).
I say take at least one big beach towel for sitting on and another towel to dry off with.
