I didn’t “become” a nudist so much as I simply stopped being ashamed of what I am and stopped being offended by what other people are. I’m neither compulsively clothed nor compulsively naked. Naked simply wins out as much as often as it does because it’s usually more comfortable than being clothed.
People try it and also enjoy it for different reasons. For some, like Rick, it’s simply more comfortable (especially when you consider how uncomfortable it is to swim or sit in a wet bathing suit!). To others, they find nudist settings more relaxing, stress-free, a way to commune with nature, feel free & liberated, to tan without getting tan lines, for body acceptance, a place where people are seen as people, as nobody can tell how wealthy you are or what you do for a living when everybody is nude, and there are a zillion other reasons! :) For more reasons, check out this article: http://nudistnaturistamerica.org/why-be-a-nudist
